In the world, few towns have many poems and songs about itself. Bodrum has it and one of this song starts with;

Where do I start?
How do I tell…?

For someone to introduce Bodrum, it is difficult to find a starting point. When you are in Bodrum, you share the same space with one of the worlds wonders (The Mausoleum), see the ancient Persians, then walk on the foot steps of Alexander the Great, breath the air of templar knights (Knights of St. John), and fell the hot sun and the warm Turkish hospitality.

The history of Bodrum or with its ancient name Halicarnassus goes back to 13th century BC. Heredotus, who is the father of history, was born in Bodrum in 484 BC. He said that Bodrum was founded by Dorians and then settled by Carians. Homer also mentioned Carian’s help on defending Troy in his world famous Iliad epic. In those days, Artemisia the Second built the Mausoleum for her husband King Mausoleum. Now this becomes the one of the wonders of the ancient world. And still Mausoleum is the general term for a large tomb.

After ancient Greeks, Persians had ruled the town. At 334 BC Alexander the Great attacked and conquered the town. Halicarnassus surrender was followed by the Alexander’s destruction of the entire town except the mausoleum. Alexander’s control over the town was followed by Romans and then the Turks. In 1492 Templar knights (Knights of St. John) took the control. At their time, their masonry removed all usable materials from the Mausoleum to the construction of castle. This fortress became known as the castle of St. Peter. Knight’s control was followed by Turks till today.

At the beginning of this century, Bodrum was a small fisherman village. Now it turned in to a holiday location similar in air and color to parts of southern Italy. It has whitewashed houses filled with flowers, mostly purple and fuchsia-colored bougainvilleas, oleanders and prickly pears.

Bodrum has a typical Mediterranean climate with its low humidity. In winter it is mild and rainy and in summers it is pretty hot and dry. It has an average high temperature of 90.5°F (33°C) in summer and 55.8°F (13°C) in winter. Average low temperatures for summer and winter are 72°F (22°C) and 43.5°F (6°C) respectively.

In Bodrum, you will be 521 miles (840 Km.) away from Istanbul, 112 miles (180 Km) from Izmir, and 22 miles (35 Km) from Bodrum International Airport. In a short radius from Bodrum, you will find Virgin Mary’s house (where she spend last days of her life), Ephesus (the Temple of Artemis, which is another wonder of the Seven Wonders of the World, resides in), Aphrodisias (city of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and fertility), and several Greek islands.

Beside side seeing, there are unlimited activities you can do in Bodrum. Diving, blue cruise, and nightlife are the most popular ones. Even though the Bodrum is the most popular party destination in Turkey, by day Bodrum is quite but thriving holiday beach resort.

What makes Bodrum an interesting location for divers is the Aegean Sea. It is warm, calm and free of tides and strong currents. Its temperature ranges from 57°F to 77°F (14° to 25°C) between summer and winter.

With these warm conditions, any time of the year diver can see hot springs, caverns, reefs and spectacular drop-offs, which were formed by volcanic off shores. Moreover because of the long history of sea trade in this area, there are underwater antiquities scattered all over the seabed. Amphoraes and other ancient relics are waiting to be discovered.

Blue cruise, a yacht voyage of exploring untouched nature and the beautiful bays, is done by gullets. These Gullets are all wooden motor sailing yacht built for cruising the coasts in calm warm waters of the Mediterranean. They are built locally at one of the three yards which have been in existence for centuries.

With gullet, you learn more about the sea than from luxurious transatlantic cruises. In blue cruise you get rid of your routines imposed on you by modern life. You lie on the deck and alone with stars, while the sea is quite choppy.

You will not dream the sea or the nature on the postcards you always see; your property will be situated on the land where your dreams come true. Bodrum offers you a new, enjoyable, relaxing and trouble-free life-style.
